The Sacredness of Ashes
Soon after I began selling my handmade artistic wooden boxes online, I had a request to make four small boxes, all identical, for use as urns. The woman, whose mother-in-law had died, desired boxes which had the tropical wood, paduak, a reddish-orange wood from Africa, to be a component of the urns.
She happened upon some boxes with padauk lids listed on my site. She said her mother-in-law had red hair, and often dressed in complimentary colors, mostly brown and orange. I had some paduak on hand, and I offered to make all four urns with padauk lids.
She was pleased with her purchase, to secure a special keepsake for those in her extended family. It was rewarding to be able to make something to honor another’s loved one.
Subsequently, I began selling urns to local funeral homes. Perhaps now is the time to think ahead, of the pleasant reminders of our loved ones.
